Vic: Speeding targeted in road toll crackdown

MELBOURNE, Jan 1 AAP - Speeding motorists face tougher penalties and a higher riskof being caught in Victoria this year as both the police and state government tackle thestate's "disgraceful" road toll.

Victoria recorded its worst road toll in a decade last year, with 451 deaths - 44 morethan the previous year.

A dramatic increase in the number of motorcyclists and pedestrians killed contributedto the "horrific year", Transport Minister Peter Batchelor told reporters.
