Meanwhile, New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark was honoured at today's conference
with the inaugural President's Award to recognise commitment and achievement in tobacco
control.
Thoracic Society president Dr John Kolbe said Ms Clark had worked tirelessly towards
tobacco control legislation during her time in the New Zealand parliament.
She had introduced the Smoke-free Environment Act in 1990 which restricted smoking
in public places, tobacco company sponsorship of sporting teams and advertising on billboards
and in magazines.
"Now, as Prime Minister, she is looking to further strengthen the legislation and has
received multi-party support to have all schools declared smoke-free zones," he said.
