WASHINGTON -- Federal storm specialists predicted an above-average hurricane season Wednesday.
Hurricane season officially begins June 1, and the outlook is for 11 tropical storms, seven of which will be hurricanes, three of them major.
``This puts coastal areas and the Caribbean islands at a much higher risk of experiencing a tropical storm or hurricane,'' said D. James Baker, head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
